1
We start our excursion in Spanish from the terminal located in front of Hadrian’s Arch. Our first stop is at the Panathenaic Stadium, also known as Kalimarmaro (beautiful marble). It was built entirely of marble, using the remains of an ancient stadium. This stadium hosted the first edition of the modern Olympic Games in 1896.
2
We continue our visit by bus, touring the most important avenues of the city. In Syntagma Square (Constitution Square), we find the Parliament building. On the walls of its staircase, we can see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by the Evzones, the Presidential Guard. Dressed in ceremonial attire, they perform the traditional Changing of the Guard ceremony. You can attend the more solemn version of the ceremony every Sunday at 11:00 AM, and a shorter version takes place every hour on the other days.
3
We continue along Panepistimiou Avenue (University Avenue), taking in the panoramic view of the Neoclassical buildings located on it. These include the Coin Museum, the Catholic Cathedral, the house of Schliemann, the discoverer of Troy who passionately pursued archaeology and proved that the Iliad described historical settings. We also pass by the Academy, the University, and the National Library. We arrive at the well-known and bustling Omonia Square (Concord Square), the center of commercial activity in the city.
From Omonia Square, we continue along Stadiou Avenue, which has existed since the Classical Greece era, passing by the National Historical Museum.
4
We disembark from the bus upon reaching the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis, where our guides will explain and show you the temples and buildings it houses. The Golden Age of Athens, is presented to us in the works of the time of Pericles, The Propylaea, the Ionic temple of Athena Nike, in memory of the victory over the Persians, the Erechtheion, original Ionic temple consecrated to the ancient divinities of Poseidon and Athena, the two gods who according to mythology disputed the protection of the city. And the Parthenon, symbol of Democratic Athens.
5
After visiting the Acropolis, we will proceed to the new Acropolis Museum. This modern architectural marvel houses the significant archaeological findings from the most important archaeological site in the country. The building itself, as well as its structure and interior division, are a tribute and reflection of the classical architecture of the Parthenon. The pieces that are kept in it, are a mixture of originals and copies, especially of the reliefs of the friezes and the pediment of the temple of the Parthenon, without forgetting the famous caryatid still today in the British Museum in London or the Louvre Museum, in Paris. With these copies, it is clear the ideology and the intention that underlies this fantastic collection, it is the museum of the claim, of the memory of a spoliation, it is the museum of the absence of a heritage. Visitors will witness the history and evolution of the famous hill and its buildings through the preserved pieces, always accompanied by one of our expert Spanish-speaking guides.
